Our current library leaves our students wanting more books that interest them. Moreover, our library is small which gives a small variety. It is my goal to provide books that students can relate to. Books that spark interest. To inspire! My hopes are to have the students build confidence in their reading so that they can work up to more challenging books, books that they would have never considered before.
I have conducted surveys and asked many students personally what books they would like to see added to our library; their voices have been heard. I have recorded their requested genres, and in some cases, I have gotten specific title and author requests. Students have had an influence in every book that has been chosen on our wishlist. These books range from street life to horror, to poetry.
Most often, Manga/ Comics were requested by students. With this request, I have chosen titles that explore deeper philosophical themes in contrast to manga/comics that feature a majority of straightforward action. Justice and Revenge in Death Note can lead to the Count of Monte Cristo. Epistemology and morality in Fullmetal Alchemist can lead to Frankenstein. With these books, I am confident that students want to come to the library to explore tiles and find a passion for reading.
