The donated books already have a safe home in my classroom and will be used for our Third Grade Book Clubs! We will kick-start our first Book Club by reading "Chocolate Fever" as a class. Book Clubs will be 4 days a week for 30-40 minutes each day. As we read one chapter each day, students will be marking three "aha's" with sticky notes. Following the chapter, my students will gather with their Book Club group, of 3-4 students, for Book Talks! They will TALK about the chapter in their club by taking turns sharing their three aha's, positively responding to each other's comments, accepting new ideas and challenge each other's thinking.
After Book Talks, my students will reflect and share their thoughts in their Reflection Notebooks. This also creates a perfect lead-in for practicing essential writing standards. What is the main idea, compare/contrast characters, summarize, etc. are a few teacher prompts I will use.
Once we've accomplished our first Class Book Club, my students will have an opportunity to start their second book club! This time, they get to CHOOSE their own book from a variety of teacher-selected (donated) chapter books. So our class will have 4-5 different books going on at one time for the next book club!
The books will make a difference in my student's reading fluency, give them a choice of what to read, share their voice through book talks and reflect their thoughts/point of view in their writing. Thank you for your consideration and I know my students will be Hooked on Book Clubs!!
