I am a teacher of Spanish Native Language Arts at BSMS. I teach 6th and 7th grade English language learners. My students come from various Spanish-speaking countries including Honduras, El Salvador, Ecuador, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Mexico, Peru, and Colombia. Many of my students have had limited access to a formal education in their home countries, while others have attended school regularly. The objective of the Native Language Arts program is for students to improve their literacy skills and academic language through the lens of culture. By the time students graduate high school, they will receive a Seal of Biliteracy, which will provide them with countless opportunities in careers and education.
Teaching Native Language Arts has been an incredibly rewarding experience. One student from El Salvador expressed feeling relieved when she came to our class and found out we speak, read, and write in her native language. It was the one place where she felt seen, heard, validated, and safe. For this reason, I am asking for your support in helping me to build a classroom library.
By having access to quality literature in Spanish, students will develop a love for reading and learning. Additionally, parents and family members will be able to help their children with reading. Books in my classroom library will represent all students in terms of race, gender, class, ability, and various other intersections. All students deserve to read books with authors and characters to which they can relate.
My students and I truly appreciate your support in our classroom library project. We can’t wait to get reading!
