I use my office as a safe and calm space for students when their emotions are getting too big for them to be able to make good choices. I encourage students to practice finding calming tools that work for them so that they can be their best selves. Sensory items such as sand, stress balls, bubble timers, and pinwheels allow students to calm themselves so that we can problem-solve and work through those emotions. Mindfulness is something that we have been teaching our students within the last few years. This helps with regulating emotions, understanding what causes our emotions and allowing students to self-advocate their needs. By practicing mindfulness, students can better handle their negative emotions so that they can be more successful in the classroom and with their peers. Deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, and grounding are different tools I teach my students to use in the classroom. Pinwheels are a fun way to help students practice taking deep breaths in through their nose and out through their mouth. I am hoping to offer more variety in the ways students choose to practice mindfulness. By having activity cards, this will create endless options that will help meet the various needs of all of my students. I have seen a great positive impact on school performance and behaviors when mindfulness and calming tools are introduced. By donating to this project, you will be helping to provide our students with the tools they need to be successful academically and emotionally.
