Exposing students to a variety of genres, authors, and book series is an effective way of sparking interest in students and encouraging independent reading. Oftentimes, the number of books available becomes overwhelming to students and they do not have a direction in which to go to choose a book. By exposing students to different books, we can open doors they did not know existed. Funding this project will open the doors to the genre of Historical Fiction and the I Survived series for four classes of third grade students! Providing each student with their own copy of a book is invaluable. Students are able to follow along as the teacher reads the text aloud and can refer back to the text to assist with reading response activities to accompany the text. The ability to read and comprehend grade-level text while referring directly to the text for information is a crucial third grade skill students must acquire to meet state expectations on standardized testing. The I Survived the Attacks of September 11, 2001 is a wonderfully written book that teaches students about this pivotal day in our country's history. The story is told from the perspective of a nine year old boy, Lucas. The students connect to Lucas and are able to understand the effects of 9/11 with a text that is age appropriate for these children. In addition to the historical implications of this book, it also serves as a potential inspiration to get students to read the numerous other books in this same series.
