  • Building Place Value Block-by-Block

    Thank you so much for your incredible generosity! This year has presented unprecedented challenges for teachers and students. Among the long-lasting impacts of COVID has been the unfinished learning from the past two years. My third graders started this year without fully finishing the learning from first and second grade. Your generosity has helped to fill the learning gaps from the past two school years.

    My students entered with difficulty comprehending essential place value concepts. The Digi-blocks that you purchased for us allowed them to build that understanding firsthand by literally constructing and deconstructing numbers. They packed tens into hundreds and deconstructed tens into ones. When we learned addition and subtraction algorithms, they connected directly to this knowledge, understanding the process more deeply.

    Your kind giving has begun to close the gaps that COVID tore open and has ignited enthusiasm for early mathematics in a whole class of future thinkers and tinkerers! We thank you so much!”

  • Working Together While Apart

    Thank you so much for the funding to purchase the headsets! When I first took them out of the box, my students audibly "ooh-ed" and "ahh-ed," excited to look like their favorite YouTube gamers.

    The headsets have been a godsend! Because of strict distancing requirements, we had to rethink partner work. The headsets have allowed us to work in partner pairs on Zoom. The built-in microphones allow them all to talk at the same time without the sound interfering with learning, and the headphones keep the audio personal. Furthermore, we receive instruction from a teacher who Zooms in, so the headsets allow everyone in the class to fully participate in her lessons.

    Thank you for allowing our class to continue to love learning despite the unprecedented challenges of schooling during COVID.”

COVID-19 has dramatically restructured how our children learn. While my class is planned to start in person, group work will be a challenge while maintaining a safe social distance of six feet. As children from some of the Bronx's most disadvantaged areas, my students have been hit especially hard by the pandemic. My students are a naturally collaborative bunch: They delight in working as a team, building understanding together, and helping each other learn. These headsets will allow them to work together on separate devices while keeping the room at a productive volume. With these headsets, students will be able to collaborate in online meetings, construct cooperative Google documents, and share the joy of their discoveries with their classmates.

About my class
