Anxiety and depression in children are at an all-time high. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 1 in 6 U.S. children aged 2–8 years (17.4%) had a diagnosed mental, behavioral, or developmental disorder. This decline in our student's mental health has a direct link to the increase in behavior problems in school as well as academic struggles. Mindfulness has been found to improve emotion regulation, mental health, attention, memory, and learning. Our school would like to implement a calming room for our students struggling with mental health. Our at-risk students will be scheduled daily for the calming room and other students will be able to use the room on an as-needed basis. In addition, all classes will visit the calming room once a month for social-emotional lessons with myself, the counselor. We plan to train every student to use calming strategies and mindfulness whenever they begin to feel anxiety or depression. The school's goal is to decrease behaviors by teaching students how to regulate their emotions before they become disruptive to class. Creating a calming room with soft lighting and cool down activities for students to recharge can help them return to class ready to learn.
