The flexible seating options I am requesting for my students will give them the ability to wobble, bounce, rock, or stand in order to stay actively engaged in the classroom. Flexible seating has been proven to increase focus and keep students alert because oxygen is flowing to the brain. Students will have a daily choice as to which flexible seating option they will choose. This will promote a sense of empowerment, ownership of learning, and community within my students. According to the National Education Association article “Understanding Universal Design in the Classroom,” the learning space is an important aspect of the whole educational experience: “One cannot have a community of learners without having a positive instructional climate. Instructors help to create this climate by everything that they do, from the way they respond to student questions to the arrangement of the classroom chairs.” For my diverse group of students, traditional seating is not providing them with the freedom they needs to utilize the classroom to meet our new age learning expectations. The classroom is an active community that should prepare students for the real world. Flexible seating will give my students the opportunity to hone in on real world expectations: collaboration, problem solving, and creative thinking.
