Sensory breaks are used daily in our speech therapy rooms. We utilize many materials throughout our sessions to provide this input, including sensory bins, kinetic sand, squishy balls, and slime. The students also enjoy reading books which make various sounds. We work with many children who struggle to remain in their seat and seek continuous movement, or who become overstimulated quickly and have difficulty calming down. We are hoping to create effective calm-down corners which will help our students recognize their feelings and the feelings of others, acknowledge that these unpleasant feelings are normal, and provide our students with the structure necessary to help them calm down. The requested materials will help us create these spaces. We have noted the effectiveness of fidget toys and breaks throughout our sessions; use of calm-down corners would only provide greater benefits for our students.
