Students need to write. 2020 has provided them ample opportunities to send emojis, copy and past, and even TikTok their way through a conversation. Help me to encourage real writing by donating classic, bound journals to my students.
As a seasoned classroom teacher this year has been humbling. Thankfully, students’ desire to learn and express themselves has helped me to overcome my own learning obstacles as I have slowly learned to use our online platforms for learning and building community. One challenge I’ve faced in teaching writing this year has been the mode – computers. It is hard to enforce having students write on paper, and in fact many students do not have basic supplies at the ready since most teachers do not require any type of writing without a key board.
Every year I observe students feeling protective of their ideas and proud of their writing achievements, and that has been especially true this year, where school feels more like a treat and less like a requirement. I want to show them how much I value their words and encourage them to value their own writing by providing each student with a beautiful journal that will last beyond our current year of disrupted learning. My hope is that by having a journal they will actually interact with a pen and paper, not just a keyboard. Further, I want to them to view writing as a life long skill they will hone outside of our class and beyond this school year. Help me show them their words, thoughts, stories, and voices matter by providing them with a journal that is not just sufficient, but magnificent.
