Students will get a chance to visit one of the oldest lighthouses in Georgia. They will march into Old Fort Jackson where they will dress as soldiers, explore their living quarters and hear stories about the war and its immediate effects. They will visit Tybee Island’s Marine Science Center where they learn about sand dune formations and ocean life. They will spend time at the Port of Savannah and watch the cargo ships pass by. Before we leave, they will tour the historic squares of Savannah where they will learn about the rich history and colorful characters of the city. Traveling to Savannah will make Georgia's history come alive! The overnight Savannah field trip is used to support and reinforce the Georgia History concepts that have already been taught. The trip to Savannah will become a mobile classroom where students will see places, hear stories, and learn more about events and people they have read about and discussed in class. In addition to enhancing the curriculum, this trip will provide opportunities for students to use life skills such as teamwork, time management, and communication. For those economically disadvantaged students, this trip will provide an equal opportunity to experience things outside classroom that their families may not be able to afford.
