Sometimes it's tough for students to see how abstract ideas in curriculum and text books affect their lives. By giving them access to magazines and newspapers they are able to connect the ideas and apply them to real-life situations. They can learn about how educational principles make a difference in the real world. They will see that what they're learning is applicable to the real world. By applying academia to their own lives, it will become relevant and they will be able to access higher level principles when they see why they should care.
