Our high school is implementing May Term this school year. May Term exists to assist students in developing their agency, efficacy, & passions while gaining valuable real-world and academic skills so they can succeed in a world of rapid and constant change. May Term provides unique educational opportunities during the school year. Each course is aligned with one of the career pathways which are defined by the Department of Education, and based on those Standards. Mini-courses are available to underclassmen, and they may be academic- or enrichment-based. Academic-based opportunities include a graded assessment and are closely tied to the school's core curriculum, while enrichment-based experiences include a pass/fail assessment and are offered in various forms and formats. Regardless of which they choose, all mini-courses cover unique subjects the traditional scheduling does not. Seniors can participate in the mini-courses, or they can choose to complete an internship. Many choose to shadow community professionals, artists, and leaders. Several seniors have secured summer jobs as a direct result of their internships and many others have majored in a related field. May Term makes a difference for kids because it allows them to choose a course that fits their passions and helps them find lots of success in school. It also helps them become more future-ready and connects them to our community. This project allows for our students to have water bottles when they are out and about off school grounds doing experiential learning. The granola bars will be used for our groups who are out doing physical activity within their learning experience. The water bottles and granola are necessary because the majority of our students will be off campus for the bulk of their day. They will ensure that being a part of the experiential learning doesn't require student cost.
