Graphic novels are not just comics, but high interest and award-winning literature! The popularity of graphic novels has caused an increased demand for more of these types of books in my classroom. More books mean more readers in my middle school classroom! The benefits of reading graphic novels cannot be ignored: students are exposed to a high level of vocabulary; students read at a rapid rate, thus increasing their volume of reading; and students utilize other critical reading skills such as inferring, drawing conclusions, and empathizing with characters. Graphic novels can be all sorts of genres from memoir to historical fiction, nonfiction to fantasy, and everything in between. Graphic novels make reading accessible for all types of readers.
