  • Computer Aids Promote Social Distancing

    Funded Feb 4, 2022

Thank you so much for the cleaning supplies. It's so nice to be able to clean my room and desks now without having to purchase the supplies out of my own pocket. I especially like the electronic wipes to wipe down the Chromebooks.

The individual headphones and computer mice were also beneficial. My students who didn't have headphones for listening to Spanish assignments were so happy to have a pair of headphones that they only used. They enjoyed not having to share the headphones with others. The mice were so easy to clean that anyone who wanted to work with a mouse got one and used it, then cleaned it off.

Again, thank you very much for helping the educational system in my classroom. I genuinely appreciate it.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Portillo

  • Increase Spanish Fluency with Spanish Level 1 Novels

    Funded Feb 6, 2020

Because or your gracious donations, my students have been able to read more novels in class during our "Free Voluntary Reading (FVR)" time. The students have enjoyed getting the books and reading the new titles. These new titles have been very helpful because they've allowed me to differentiate the reading levels in the classroom. The students were able to choose the titles that best met their comprehension levels in the target language.

Sadly, with the Pandemic Shutdown, we did not get to explore the various novels as much as I would have liked. However, I do know that all of these titles will be used next year to foster the growth of my future students. Research supports that students learn 1000 times faster when they read accessible language in context. The novels you've donated provide just that.

Thank you once again for the donation and I look forward to using these materials in future years. This library will continue to grow and support student growth in language acquisition.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Portillo

Reading is one of the top ways to increase students' comprehension and proficiency levels when learning a new language. As such, my students spend two days a week reading a novel of their choice in Spanish. I have been doing this with my students for several years and have seen some incredible growth in my students in the past. This technique helps every level of student because the novels are written at many different levels. My students who have lower reading levels in English tend to excel when reading in Spanish because the process is slowed down for them and the brain has time to connect the new words to meaning. I've had their English teachers come back and tell me that they are comprehending reading in English even better because they are reading in Spanish. My goal is to help the next generation of Americans to be biliterate. That is why reading is so important to me as a teacher. However, I have very few materials. The books that I do have, I've purchased myself over the years. I used to have many novels, but I changed schools and could not take the majority of books with me, so I am having to start a over by creating a new reading library. The variety of titles I'm requesting is so that my students have many different types of stories and reading levels to choose from. This project helps each student grow where he or she is currently at in the language. I am also asking for a literature rack so I can display these new books for my students.
