Each day, too many students come to school without having eaten breakfast, or a nutritious meal for dinner. This basic need has a profound impact on learning, emotional wellbeing, and one's ability to engage with healthy social interactions. At Evergreen High School, 76% of our students qualify for free and reduced-price lunch so this problem is especially pervasive. In addition to hunger, an exceptionally high number of students on our campus have executive functioning needs that must be supported through additional interventions. Meaningful conversations and guided reflection are powerful tools in assisting students with improving their executive functioning skills. This leads to improved sense of belonging, engagement in academics, and independent agency. This is especially important now, after almost two years of missing in-person instruction and the structure that accompanies it. This campaign will be used exclusively with our students with IEPs, whose needs have been even more amplified by this lack of support. The drinks and snacks we are hoping to fund with this campaign would be used to provide students a choice snack in return for their participation in goal setting, self-assessment, and reflection on a daily basis through a "Check in/Check out process. This way, students are having a meaningful conversation with a trusted adult and have their basic physiological needs met. Thank you for considering funding our project!
