This expedition through history is specifically designed for my students because it allows them to make a connection to history. Through finding that there are more ways to experience history other than through a book or the classroom. The emphasis on project-based learning is embodied through our school culture and the New Mexico Social Studies Standards. Chaco Canyon offers an immersive experience that will let the students embark on a journey that inhibits the five senses. The students will be able to take an informed narrated tour of the home of the Ancestral Puebloans and experience the way in which those who came before interacted.
Chaco Canyon is a remote archaeological site that will allow students to connect to history in a way that they never have. The roads into Chaco Canyon are not paved and can become hazardous. Therefore, this trip is a special journey. We will spend five hours exploring the ceremonial areas, building techniques of the structures, technological advancements, communication, transportation and trying to identify answers to the question of why did the Ancestral Puebloans vacate this area.
