Reading truly is fundamental, especially to a child who has limited exposure to the English language when he or she steps foot outside of school. As an English teacher, I can only expose my students to so much content in a period, a day, or even a school year. We hardly have the opportunity to discuss grammar, vocabulary, and creativity as much as I would like. Independent reading is essential to escalating a student's knowledge and academic success. By providing a welcoming environment, I can spark an excitement in students for reading, with the hopes that when they do engage, they are learning about ideas, concepts, and vocabulary, without even realizing it! Additionally, giving students the ability to work outside of their desks, collaborate in small groups, and even "check out" these books, helps to develop a sense of independence and responsibility amongst each learner, making them more accountable for themselves and invested in their own learning and growth.
