My students often come to school hungry and are unable to focus in class. Some have not eaten the night before and come in upset and angry. They are unable to concentrate on school work and often ask for something to eat. We try to have snacks around in our classrooms, but it gets expensive and we don't always have enough for all the kids that need it. Missing meals and experiencing hunger impair children’s development and achievements and eating breakfast is proven to help children perform better. When I give my students something small to eat, like nuts, crackers, or Pop Tarts, they are able to focus on the academic classes. Their performance and success at school are directly affected by their nutrition. They can not concentrate if they are hungry, and giving them something small will keep them engaged throughout the entire class.
