Because there is a dearth of multicultural literature in our school library, I am asking for 35 copies of The Autobiography of Malcolm X. This material will give students a glimpse into a different cultural experience where an individual is informed in a different way. This will lend a sense of awareness as to how the American experience can greatly vary. The Civil Rights movement is also a background that dovetails nicely with their history class. Malcolm X's life- coming-of-age, making mistakes, finding guidance, becoming a lifelong learner, losing faith and then gaining wisdom- is a perfect fit for twelfth grade in terms of reading high-interest nonfiction and writing personal essays. This autobiography takes students through a journey of a man whose consciousness is raised through self-determination and struggling to overcome strife and self-doubt. Students will gain an appreciation for and write about themes of redemption, appearance and illusion, and man versus society while studying this piece of literature.
