Back to the Drawing Board
Funded Sep 2, 2020Your generosity in providing supplies support to my students is greatly appreciated. They now have a drawing supply kit that they can use in class, or at home. This kit consists of multiple drawing pencils and charcoal. These tools will be used in multiple projects throughout the semester.
Everyone is excited to have their own personal set of drawing materials are are thankful to you all for you for making this happen.
In these uncertain times, making decisions about shared materials and supplies can be challenging. Your assistance has made that part of my job much simpler.”

A Little P and P (Printmaking and Painting)
Funded Sep 16, 2020My students have had a great experience using a variety of painting tools, products and materials to create painted acrylic projects this semester. They were excited to try painting on canvas and to make pieces based on different cultures we studied.
We have also been excited to work with our new printmaking materials, including gelli plates and new brayers.
Your generosity has allowed students to have the opportunity to work with supplies that otherwise would not have been available to them and it has been much appreciated by all.”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Wilkes
This classroom project was brought to life by The DonorsChoose 20th Anniversary Fund and 3 other donors.Support and Supply Creativity
Funded Aug 17, 2020My students love their art kits! They had been awaiting them with great anticipation and the day I passed them out was just like Christmas. The only thing missing was Santa! We spent some time looking at all the materials contained in their zipper bag: a colored pencil set, charcoal, a sharpie marker, a watercolor set, a pencil sharpener, 5 assorted brushes, 2 types of artist erasers and a glue stick. A fleshed out drawing pencil set was provided from an additional DonorsChoose grant.
Students wasted no time making use of the materials in their kits. We have used the watercolors in a negative space tree painting and the colored pencils in a blind contour self portrait. Value studies for all students will require the use of the drawing materials.
Thank you all for understanding the need for these individual supplies during this crazy time. Many students have already taken their kits home to work during absences. This would not have been possible without your generous donations.”

Mrs. Wilkes
The Power of Public Art
Funded Feb 28, 2020Our mural was scheduled for completion at the end of the school year in May. Needless to say, the COVID pandemic and the closure of schools in March put a swift end to that deadline! Luckily, our visiting artist, Octavio Logo, and I were able to regroup in April and worked together to adjust to the current conditions.
We spent time with the kids completing ideas for the final piece, and in late July, moved the whole project into the basement studio of the Fenix Gallery in Fayetteville, AR, known as the Down Under. It was a great space in which to paint, out of the heat and the rain. Masks were worn by all and we had lots of hand sanitizer and wet wipes. Crazy times!
My students were thrilled to work with each other again and to have a meaningful and safe way to be together. They learned about the whole process of mural making, from conception to completion, in addition to gaining more painting skills. It was a privilege for us all to have the opportunity to work with such an amazing artist. I think this is one of the best educational experiences they will ever have.”
