As a teacher for high school students with disabilities, specifically students with autism, it is evident that my students require routine and structure to help them navigate their school day. Loss of structure for a student with autism can provoke anxieties and panic, which can be detrimental for the student as well as the educator. Therefore, during periods of downtime such as lunchtime, it is essential for my students to be able to engage in activities that are fun and educational but also provide the structure that they need during their lunchtime and or free time. By donating The Electronic STEAM LittleBits Kits to my school, lunchtime for my students with autism will no longer be a stressful time of day where there are loud noises, crowds of people and no structure. The Electronic STEAM LittleBits Kits will provide fun, structured time to help reduce stress and anxieties during lunchtime. These kits will provide hands-on learning through tinkering with inputs, outputs, sensors, and motors to gain tech literacy. Additionally, students will gain creative confidence and critical 21st-century skills through scaffolded activities that are included in the kits. Students will disabilities require varied means of learning, providing them with tangible activities that allow them to learn through experimentation, gives the student a sense of independence, while also giving them the structure they need during lunchtime.
