Working in the woodshop is a highlight for many students coming to my class. For many of my 5th graders, this is the first opportunity they have to use these tools and build their own project. Measuring and safety are two main things I focus on with students in the shop. Having enough safety glasses that are not scratched up and enough measuring tapes will aid students in being able to complete their tic-tac-toe boards successfully and on time. Having enough of the correct tools and keeping students working safely in the woodshop are essential to ensure success for this unique learning environment. They utilize the math and fractions lessons learned in their core classes when they are measuring their own project. While students get excited about being able to build and take home their project, I get excited to see them applying what they have learned from math class when making the measurements for their project. An added benefit is the 21st Century skills like critical thinking, collaboration, and creativity students begin to develop as they work through the steps in making their project. The end result is a win-win with the students excited about learning and what they can accomplish!
