In my classroom I host something called a Snack Shack. Here the students provide a healthy snack to be "purchased" by classmates for their daily snack using an allowance given by Mr. H. Through this model the students learn how to manage money, make change, and identify overall value (nutritional & economical) in their snack choices. By having a classroom refrigerator I could provide a space to keep healthy snack options like fruit, yogurt, meat, and cheese for their Snack Shack. When I shared this plan, they became excited with the possibility of having a larger variety of options. My goal this year towards professional development is to try to turn students' learning experiences into real-world applications. Snack Shack brings the merchandising world to us! The project started as a lesson in making change, but has grown into much more. In this model students: are held responsible for providing to a larger community, modeling proper buying etiquette, understand the value of merchandise, experience first-hand economic development such as supply-and-demand, learn the importance of saving money and wise spending, and of course making change. My goal is to also incorporate a health objective where we can study the nutritional value in each snack and learn about their impact on our bodies.
