Because of tragic events at schools across America, over the past few years, much of the funding in my state has been shifted away from extra curricular activities, such as athletics, and focused instead on school safety. School safety is important. I believe, however, that the best way to keep our schools safe is to engage kids in activities that teach them camaraderie, show the importance of a community beyond themselves, and involve them in activities that build their self-esteem, connect them with others, and help them remain physically active and healthy. Most students who engage in violent acts do so because they do not connect well with others at their schools. As the school baseball coach, I welcome everyone. No one is cut from the team. Anyone can be a part of the team. As a result of this "open door" policy, over 20% of our 6th-8th grade boys have joined my team. This is a wonderful thing -- but has also taxed my limited supply of equipment. With over 60 players in middle and high school, we go through a lot of baseballs. Baseballs are VERY expensive. If they get wet, they are ruined. We work hard to treat our equipment with care and respect. Still, we go through a lot of balls over the course of a season. I need help keeping my team supplied with quality equipment and hope that someone is willing to help us out.
