My science students will work in teams of 3-4 to decide the destination for a billion-dollar space flight. They must work to decide if the destination is plausible, if there will be research opportunities available, and if they will have (or be able to "harvest") provisions in case of a crisis. Teams must be able to show that traveling to their galactic destination will be beneficial to the citizens of Earth. Student teams will carefully assemble and decorate the Estes Alpha rockets. They will then launch the completed rockets to begin their journey to an uncharted destination. The hands-on learning opportunity will promote concept development and encourage all team members to take ownership of their learning. By increasing motivation and engagement, students will gain a more complete understanding of the concepts learned. Even the most challenging students will be in awe of what they have accomplished. This is my first time teaching 8th grade science in several years and I am beyond excited to share this experience with them.
