Flexible seating is a great way to add incentives for students and keep them focused on their work. During middle school, students slowly start to focus more and more on social issues and less on academic success. These ball chairs will surround my kidney table and create a "Research Zone". Whether it is done in small groups or individually, my students will use the new ball chairs to burn energy and stay focused while they work hard analyzing documents, doing research, and creating/defending arguments for debates. I have high expectations for my students, and to deliver results they deserve a proper place to work. My 6th, 7th and 8th grade students don't get too many days off. On a regular basis they are asked to analyze very difficult texts and read pieces from people such as Herodotus, Patrick Henry, John Locke, and Andrew Carnegie. Not only do they read these documents, they also analyze political cartoons, create presentations, gather evidence, and take a stance on an important issue while we debate. My Research Zone will hopefully inspire our next wave of independent thinkers.
