The move from elementary to middle school can be terrifying! School counselors at the middle schools have shared that one of the biggest challenges their sixth graders face at the beginning of the school year is opening up their lockers. During one of my guidance lessons in the spring, I plan to visit fifth grade classrooms and bring a set of padlocks. This will allow time for our fifth graders to practice opening up a combination lock and ease one of their biggest fears. I mentioned this lesson activity to my fifth graders earlier this year and many of them still ask, "Ms. Clark, when exactly are we going to practice opening up locks?!?" I can hear the angst in their voices! I am seeking a donation of padlocks for each one of my fifth graders. This would give our fifth grade students the opportunity to graduate elementary school with their own padlock. Many students are not able to master the skill of opening a lock during a guidance lesson, so having their own to take home and practice with will hopefully increase the likelihood that they are able to open one without any stress before they begin middle school. I am asking for a supply of approximately one hundred padlocks to make this possible! I strongly believe if our fifth grade students were each given a padlock to practice opening, they would begin middle school with much more confidence. Thank you for your support of this project and for your commitment to student learning.
