My students need iPads for a technology boost in their education that will also contribute and support their independence skills. They can do research projects, reading and math stations, and be exposed to technology that is regularly used in the everyday world, experiences they will need in order to grow into independent adults. My students LOVE technology! It gives them the opportunity to take control! iPads for my classroom is ideal because it is hands on and uses their fingers or hands instead of having to type on a keyboard. Using iPads allows them to move about the room and find a comfy spot that would work best for their individual learning style. For literacy and math stations they would be able to choose from a variety of different apps that are at their specific level of learning, they would do this every single day! They are also able to use them to enhance what they already know, by building words or building sentences. iPads are very motivating, there are many functional behaviors to teach (how to go to the restroom, how to put your items up in the morning and start morning work, etc) Having iPads would allow me to provide visuals on what to do, but also record data on student progress and (most exciting!) allow me to reinforce the students good behavior or progress by allowing them iPad time once they completed the activity appropriately. Most importantly it would allow them to communicate with others my frequently. Since my students have more severe disabilities it is very difficult for them to communicate in different situations. Having iPads would allow them access to apps where they can locate images and then the iPad speaks and answers in their words.
