I've been interested in creating a makerspace for my students. I’ve been learning more and more about them due to the program at the middle school that gets them involved with robotics and other STEM related activities. At the high school, we currently have no such club for our students. We have new graduation pathways for our state, which means students have the opportunity for more electives, but we don’t have the staff to offer many more electives than we already do. To help offset some of our course offerings; we do offer an outstanding vocational program. It allows students to receive career and technical training in their interested career choice, during their junior and senior years, but they need to qualify for it. We have various opportunities in many STEM related fields, but not all students will qualify for this due to grades and needed classes. Since they are gone for half the day, they need to be on track with their core classes. By providing this space, I feel I can bring these STEM opportunities to benefit not only those that might not qualify for vocational classes, but also to support my classroom teachers in those respective fields and students’ learning in general. Books are still the backbone of any library, but a school library in the 21st century needs to offer more. I have purchased a 3D printer and Bloxels with some fundraiser money, but need to acquire items in circuitry and more for coding. As a Performance Qualified High School for the 2019-2020 school year, means we can provide curriculum, instruction, programs, and educational innovations designed to help engage students in greater ways than what is expected of other schools. So, having a Maker Monday, would be just one more opportunity to help engage our students.
