Recently in a professional development training, our literacy coach brought up the benefits of having the students vary their writing tools to increase their fine motor abilities. Students use pencils frequently, but they need to be able to successfully use pens as well. It may seem so simple, but in a digital world it's important to be mindful and to purposely build in educational time to work on handwriting and penmanship. These long-lasting, high quality pens would help create increased access to those sorts of learning opportunities in the classroom. One idea of how to use pens to benefit the students is to start using different colored pens during writing ELA workshop and other lessons. Our next writing unit is a nonfiction unit. Students may chose to write about animals, locations, math/financial literacy, and many others subjects where they are the expert! Students can use these pens in all subjects to improve their ability to communicate their information and knowledge. They can use their writing to share and connect ideas with their families for increased parent involvement. During writing workshop, the students can use black pens to write the story and colored pens to edit and revise. We have been learning that writers go through a process and continuously reread and improve their writing. Writing in pen helps students and the teacher see where students are in developing their writing craft, especially during our writing conferences and peer editing sessions. Please consider helping our class develop fine motor skills, penmanship, and visual presentation skills through this project. These pens will provide the supplies that help set my students up to succeed. Thank you in advance for helping each and everyone one of my students thrive in our classroom!
