In Special Education, we work on techniques to help students focus, resolve conflict, and self-calming. By working on these techniques, students are able to maintain attention on their classwork. Our goal this year is to focus on positive thinking and apply this daily in and out of the classroom. Mindfulness helps students develop empathy for others, and to reflect on behavior in the classroom. Flexible seating and yoga mats will be used daily in the classroom to encourage positive participation. Studies have shown that practicing mindfulness for a few minutes a day can increase student learning. With these materials, students will be able to have a space they feel proud of. They can take brain breaks, and breaks when the classroom becomes overwhelming. Students will be taught strategies to help overcome everyday stress. They will actively be able to calm their mind and body. It is my hope the flexible seating and yoga mats used along with classroom strategies will help learning flourish!
