Having a turtle in the classroom will help my students in so many ways. I will use the turtle as an engaging tool to build community in the classroom. The turtle will also help create a calming learning environment as it will create a space for students to go to self regulate. By having this turtle, all of my students both present and future, will have a motivating tool to develop responsibility and empathy by caring for a gentle creature on a daily basis when they enter my classroom. By having a class pet, it creates academic motivation. I will combine turtle care tasks as a reward when students reach their goals. Students can have a higher interest in reading by having the opportunity to read to the turtle or having a quiet and caring listener when it is time for students to practice their speeches. In third grade, some of the main topics we focus on is multiplication, fractions, informational text, habitats and life cycles. Students will have common background knowledge from taking care of a turtle to strengthen their knowledge and skills in the given academic topics making the content more relatable.
