For the first time, students are excited about reading. We started reading a contemporary novel, On The Come Up, and students finally see themselves represented in literature. We read for the first 10-15 minutes of class and even though I have some students who can't recall finishing a single book, students are invested the whole time. In my room, I have a reading area that consists of a rug, a patched together bean bag coming apart at the seams, and a pillow. Regardless, my students are excited to take turns reading in the reading area. Every day, they ask if it is their turn. If my project is funded, I will be able to continue the excitement of a reading area by replacing the materials that are falling apart. This will not only promote literacy and keep students excited about reading, but will also allow students to take time out of their day to relax and unwind with a good book. Being a part of the group whose turn it is to sit in the reading area will, in turn, promote their social emotional learning as they are working with others and practicing relaxation in a shared space. I am so excited to see where their passion will go with a fully funded area dedicated to reading.
