Eighth graders study the causes of the Civil War and the War itself. It can sometimes be difficult for my students to imagine the horrors of slavery and life in the 19th century. I often use historical-fiction to bring the time periods we study to life. Since many of my kids are below grade level in their reading abilities using high interest and easy to access books is key.
I would love to be able to incorporate more about the life of Frederick Douglass in our study of the years before the Civil War. A new graphic narrative book called The Life of Frederick Douglass: A Graphic Narrative of a Slave's Journey from Bondage to Freedom would be a great addition to their studies. The story is told from Mr. Douglass's point of view and recounts the key events of his life and his role in the abolition movement. A book like this: easy to read, exciting, and from a slave's own perspective will help my students understand the evils of slavery and how the Civil War came about to abolish this institution in the United States.
