Our school is a Title I school with a high percentage of students receiving free or reduced lunch. The students in my class are a diverse and wonderful group of children who would flourish with some fresh materials to make learning more fun. As a first grade teacher, I pride myself in ensuring that I am creating an educational experience for young children that will help them grow into lifelong lovers of learning. Students’ engagement skyrockets with new classroom tools for learning! In order for students to have complete access to books, they need an organized classroom library to do so. My students love to book shop and find fiction books with engaging characters like Pete the Cat and Gerald (Elephant) and Piggy. They search our informational texts ranging in topics from butterflies to plants to airplanes. These plastic bins and magazine holders will help students easily access books at their appropriate reading levels and increase their excitement for and love of reading. Every morning my students are ready to shine in engaging phonics lessons. One tool that would make this time so much more engaging for the children would be dry erase pocket sleeves. These sleeves help students to write letter sounds, words and sentences applying skills taught each day. We can’t forget the dry erase markers that my students use to write with, too! Our school is very fortunate to have access to iPads and other technology, but these tablets are difficult to use in our open space setting without headphones. Students are asked to bring their own headphones from home to use in the classroom. Sometimes headphones break and new ones are needed. By donating to this project, students will always have access to headphones to listen to interesting books as well as sharpen their math skills.
