As a teacher of first graders it is incredibly important to give my students every opportunity to have engagement in their learning of words both in print and through listening. In order to accomplish this huge goal it is imperative to have the materials available to the students in the classroom.
A listening center allows students who are struggling with their reading skills to work through a book while listening to it being read to them. It allows them to grow in their reading confidence level as they learn new words that help to expand their vocabulary.
As they develop their word attack skills it allows them the opportunity hear and read harder books or books on a subject that they enjoy.
It allows them to celebrate the growth through listening and gain confidence that is sometimes difficult for them.
