At our school, many students come from a "high needs" background. As part of the Giving Project, we asked students to write about of of their basic needs, and those of their families. Many students wrote about needing basic hygiene products, like new underwear, sanitary pads, and diapers for younger siblings. Others wrote about needing a bike or skateboard to get to and from school, because they currently have to walk almost an hour each way. Some students who already have a mode of transportation need bike locks and helmets to ensure their safety, and the security of their bikes. To be able to fund the items mentioned above would be monumental for my students, and would ensure that they make it to school on time, feeling safe and cared for, and ready to learn.
Our hope is that these simple acts of kindness spread across our campus and will help many students who are in need. One goal is to create a stronger bond with our students earlier in the year and allow that bond to lend itself into a positive way to mentor our students. We have also shared our experience with the staff and hope to incorporate more teachers into our giving project for next year.
In closing, the Giving Project has opened our eyes to meeting the needs of our students outside of the classroom. While our donors cannot personally see the rewards and benefits their purchases will provide, we can and would like to express our deepest gratitude for any gifts we receive. Students truly do their best when their most basic needs of health, food, and safety are met!
Thank you!
