"Are we reading the book today?" This is asked all day to me when I teach The Outsiders. I have taught it for the past thirteen years because my students, whether avid or reluctant readers, are mesmerized by the characters and the plot of this classic story. I love nothing more than glancing at my students and seeing their reactions as they read the story. This is always the first novel I teach in the year because it ignites a love for reading in them that they have not experienced. Once we read The Outsiders, they ask me with eager anticipation, "What book are we going to read next?" At that point, I know they have developed a love for escaping into in a novel.
