On May 8th, 2020 I hope to take 66 high school freshmen to Boston, MA. For many, this would be their first trip out of the state of Maine. It is our culminating acitivity after a interdisciplinary unit on exploration. This dives into everything from exploring the world around us (in history and currently) exploring ourselves (as they take the journey to adulthood) and exploring space. We hope to travel via Amtrak which would be not only cost-effective and a fantastic experience for students who don't use public transit outside of the school bus, but would also tie into our discussion of exploring new parts of the world and the movement of peoples. Once in Boston we are planning to take the 66 students to The Boston Museum of Science, where they will see Destination Mars: The New Frontier in the planetarium. We will also visit historic sites of Boston either via guided tour or Freedom Trail (money dependent) where students can understand the exploration of the new world and see that there is an entire experience outside of theirs out there to see as well!
