The materials listed for this project would provide young children the opportunity to explore new mediums and to create their own original art. Preschool children enjoy hands on opportunities to explore. Through exploration, the children discover their own sense of artistic style and appreciation for the arts. I am amazed by observing a group of 3 and 4 year olds first experience exploring clay and water. Some children are interested in creating something from the clay while others are interested in exploring how the clay feels, what will happen when water is added to the clay. Both approaches are enjoyable learning experiences for the children. The same approach is successful with paint, glue, sculpture materials and so on. Open ended exploration turns preschoolers into artists, scientists, architects, chefs, musicians and so many other possible expressive creators. As long as they are provided with opportunities and supportive environments, children are capable of being active participants in their own learning.
