Having a cool down area will benefit all of my students in many different ways. Many of my students have different disabilities and different spectrums of Autism. They all come from various backgrounds and home lives, which makes them all so very unique. One thing that they all do exhibit is the struggle to regulate their emotions effectively.
Creating a cool down area in the classroom will give my students the space they need to cool down and provides me an opportunity to constructively remove the student before things get too escalated. Some of my students have a very difficult time regulating their own emotions and can get escalated very quickly. Having an area where they can go to at any time that is relaxing and calm and where they can practice their breathing or be able to use sensory toys will help them learn to regulate their emotions before it gets too escalated while also providing them with the tools to begin identifying when they need to stop and take a deep breath. It gives them an outlet so that they can still continue to get access to the academic curriculum instead of having severe behaviors that impede their learning as well as the learning of their peers. Some of my students also don't have a quiet spot in their house to relax or read or be artistic. The cool down area will provide them with a place where they can go to relax and enjoy a book or bring out their artistic side when they are feeling overwhelmed. Having this cool down area will benefit all of my students in numerous ways while allowing them to gain more access to the academic curriculum.
