The purpose of the Close Up trip in Ronan is about creating a positive future by encouraging citizenship. By giving students the opportunity to travel to Washington D.C. and gaining first hand experience on how an idea becomes a law and how a movement becomes a policy, they will be more likely to enact change at the local level in their community. This is meant to be an uplifting and motivating experience for students on the Flathead Indian Reservation. The community of Ronan is extremely generous with their resources but it can become a hefty financial burden. This grant would allow more students to enjoy this opportunity of a lifetime. The way that they money will be distributed to students of poverty, Title VI students (Native American Descendants), and Johnson O’Malley Students (students enrolled in a tribe). Rather than having students ask for donations it would be beneficial to create a program of volunteering. This grant would be used to “pay” students for their volunteering hours. It would go directly into their Close Up account to fund their opportunity to experience Washington D.C. The volunteer hours will be monitored and the opportunities will be offered to the students in need first.
