For the Love of Reading!
Funded Jan 27, 2020Thank you again for your generosity! There is no way I would have been able to provide my students access to this many books without your support. At the time I was drafting this letter, students were still in the classroom. I want this letter to focus on what has happened between receiving the books and before the school closures. So the words that follow will reflect that.
My students have really enjoyed having a library in the classroom. I have set up a check out system that allows my students to take books home. Students are checking out books constantly! This is so encouraging considering a lot of these students were once reluctant readers.
In ELD we always take the first fifteen minutes of every class period to read silently. After students finish reading they spend a few minutes writing a summary of what they have read. The ability to pick out the main events and summarize is a crucial skill students need to exit the English learners program. Students who are reading at lower levels are still able to use the graphic novels to help them read a story and challenge them to explain their understanding.

Students now have access to a diverse set of literature through the classroom library, but certain books, including "Hey, Kiddo", "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" collection, and the RaniaTelgemeir collection, are constantly checked out. Students are always asking if a book has been returned so they can check it out. I love being able to hear my students talk about their positive reading experiences. One of the main goals of this project was to spark a joy of reading within my students. With your donations this has become a reality!
