I am a first-year teacher trying to get new, exciting novels in my 6th-grade classroom. I have had many generous donations, but many of them are used. In research, a kindle account will allow 6 devices across one account. It is my hope that introducing 6 kindles to my classroom I will be able to share books with students and allow myself to have a larger budget for other necessities like Kleenex and Clorox wipes. The sad truth is books are expensive, and students will overlook a used book, in favor of a new clean book. Digital books have many benefits, one of which is they are usually cheaper cost than hard copies. Having digital books will allow books to always look new. They will never wear, and they will always be available. Allowing students access to physical books never guarantees their return, but a digital book can never be lost. (Kindles will NEVER leave my room.) Additionally, with a Kindle, if a student comes upon a word they do not know, all they need to do is 'touch' the word, and they will have access to define it. Long term they are a more "green" approach to classroom libraries, in addition to being the first (in my school) to implement a class library of the future.
