  • Help Us Put on a Play!

    Funded Apr 24, 2022

Thank you so much for supporting my classroom and my school! Because of you, we were able to put on the school's first ever play - Luna! Students had been rehearsing for close to 5 months when set pieces, props, costumes and other materials started arriving from this project. When they saw what they'd only been able to imagine in their heads coming to life, they were so excited! The majority of the students in the cast had never done a show before, so they didn't fully understand the magic that comes with doing a performance - especially your first. These materials helped them realize just how big and exciting their show was going to be. The props and costumes helped bring their characters alive and helped them feel confident on stage! The set brought the show to life and made the crew so excited to help this show happen! We went from a group of people who all stayed after school to do a play to a cast of aspiring performers, in part because the materials helped them imagine the final product of the show.

As we've started a new school year, students from last year's program have been begging for more theater! We've just decided to put on a production of Elf Jr. this winter to keep the theatrical spirit alive!

Thank you not only for supporting last year's play, but for contributing to the longevity of the theater program at my school. I deeply appreciate your generosity!”

  • T-Shirts to Celebrate Our First Ever Play!

    Funded Jan 30, 2022

Thank you so much for your generosity on this project! Because of you, we were able to get beautiful, custom t shirts for the entire cast! Students looked so proud as they walked around school promoting our show and felt so much pride being a part of a cast as a result of the t shirts. We even had other students ask about being in the play just because they loved the t shirts so much!

Furthermore, we were able to take a field trip to the high school in our city to see their production of Once On This Island; we had students wear their Luna t shirts for that day. It was an incredible experience all around, but seeing our cast bonded together with their t shirts brought a sense of unity that we hadn't had before.

Thank you again so much for donating to this project!”

  • We’re Finally Getting to Perform a Play!

    Funded Jan 16, 2022

Thank you so much again for generously contributing to my project. Because of you, 1 week from the day I'm writing this letter, we will be performing our middle school's first play! When I first got the boxes of props, costumes, and materials, students were so eager and excited to see how we were going to turn our blank stage into a magical space. They loved understanding how each item contributed to the show as a whole and got so happy seeing what they would be carrying and wearing in the show!

The paint, primer, and other materials used to build and design the set for the play were integral to bringing this show to life. When students first saw the painted set pieces (giant sheets of plywood shaped into triangular prisms on wheels) their jaws dropped! This was the signal to them that this show was going to be amazing!

Additionally, receiving the props and costume pieces from this project brought so much humor and fun to the show! In starting this theater program, my sole goal was to create a fun space where students could express themselves fully and confidently. The fun hats, candles, string lights, and more all contributed to the performers getting to play around in their scenes and make each other (and themselves) laugh throughout the process.

The materials received through this project helped bring our show to life and realize the magic that is written into it. Thank you for contributing to that!”

  • Inspiring Multilingualism and Multiculturalism Through Classroom Literature

    Funded Aug 10, 2021

Thank you again so much for contributing so generously to my classroom. Having books from diverse authors with diverse characters that represent the students in my classroom has been so inspiring for my students and for me as a teacher. My classroom library has been alive for the first time since I started teaching as a result of these books. One of my goals this year is to inspire a love of and excitement around reading by the end of sixth grade. One of the ways that I am able to work toward achieving this goal is through these books. When students see that books are about them and that they can deeply identify with the characters, they get excited about reading. So many students have even shared that they'd never read a book with a Latinx protagonist before or by a Latinx author. When students are excited about reading, they read more; that's how they become more proficient readers.

Some specific students who have been particularly impacted by these books are a group of sixth grade boys who have been struggling a lot this year. During the first month of school, these boys were getting in a lot of trouble for making the wrong decisions. About a month into school, we had a day where we explored the books I received from this project, traded them around, and presented them. These four boys were all very interested in 2 of the texts. I started a system where I let them take the books home and when they finished, they passed it to their friend to read. A week later, all four boys had read both books, were actively discussing them in their free time, and shared how excited they were to read more books about boys of color. Their behavior in my class and beyond was completely changed because they found a sense of community and engagement in my classroom library and our school as a whole as a direct result of these books.

Not only are my students excited about these books, but I am so excited too! I am slowly getting to read them all and am getting so inspired to make my curriculum more culturally responsive and antiracist in future years. The long-term impacts that these books have already had and will have for my students and I have inspired so much excitement and optimism in this hard year.

Thank you again so much for your generosity and helping me inspire the love of reading in my room.”

  • Bilingual Theater Builds Community and Celebrates Identity!

    Funded Jan 23, 2020

Thank you so much for your generosity toward my theater program. Because of you, 17 performers and 30 backstage helpers got to begin the process of putting on their first play. The items and paint that resulted from this project got my students excited about performing, helped show them what the play would actually look like on stage, and inspired so much creativity! Unfortunately, as a result of the pandemic, our after school program, as well as our school were shut down. Though the project is on pause right now during virtual learning, my school as well as I are fully planning to bring the program back when it is safe next year. We will still be putting on the same play, Luna by Ramon Esquivel, so the props and set pieces will all still be very useful.

Thank you again for believing in this project and helping my students participate in their first play process!

    Sincerely,

    Jessi Dimmock”

All desired materials will go towards making my students hopes for an excellent theater program become a reality. I am re-starting my school's theater program after its two year break and am thrilled to give my students a chance to participate in the arts after school. Rehearsals will start in February and we will learn about theater in general, do community building activities, and put on a play. The play will be bilingual (English and Spanish) and will center around Latinx identity - which is how the majority of my students identify themselves. We do theater with young people because, if done right, it allows us to believe in magic. However, that magic requires supplies for set pieces, props, costumes, lighting, and so much more; this project consists of the most basic, but most important needs for this play. Through magical realism, this play brings the moon, the stars, and outer space to life. Centered around a young girl who dreams of becoming an astronaut, the show must have both space themed objects on stage and background elements. The paint, brushes, glow stars, star light, and light up curtain will help me create a backdrop that resembles the night sky in the magical way the protagonist sees it. The space book and backpacks will help bring the characters to life in a realistic way. Furthermore, the show revolves around the protagonist's journey to find friendship, and she does so through reading. It is through the story of Alice in Wonderland that she makes her first friend. Finally, the family carries around all of their belongings throughout the show. We are going to be using a wheelbarrow for this. It needs a collapsible shelf so that the family can make lunch on stage.
