Many of my students use alternative and augmentative communication (AAC) systems to communicate. That means they use visuals, a voice output system or an iPad with a communication app to communicate. I need my own communication device to show my students how to use AAC to communicate. My students are all emerging communicators that need ample opportunities to see their device being used by an experienced adult so that they can learn to use their device to communicate as well. As my students watch me communicate with the device they will start to associate the different icons with their corresponding meaning. Once those associations begin, students will explore the power of their own voice by selecting icons to communicate with those around them. Over time, students will learn to use the device independently to request more bubbles, makes silly jokes, tell their sibling to "stop," answer questions and communicate endlessly throughout the day.
