I teach state specific history to 8th graders in West Virginia. We spend the entire year learning about our state's birth, history by region, geography, culture, government, and economics! I have found that students think history is boring unless you can find a way to HOOK them! Using photographs and stories told by those who where there really interest my students and they love learning about the specific places we mention during class if they can visual them. I try and hit on the "weird" stuff that interests students-monsters, ghosts, disasters, folk lore, and personal narratives of residents during class discussions. These events are the ones that keep the students interested and wanting to visit and learn more. Many of my students never leave our small part of the state, but it is my job to make the state history come alive as much as possible for the year I have them in my class.
