  • Communicating Through Books

    Thank you for choosing my project to fund and providing my students with new books to read and explore. Many of my students are still learning the fundamentals of speech and language, and using books with elements such as peek-a-boo flaps and textured pages allowed them to learn and explore books at their level. I truly enjoy watching my students learn skills such as turn-taking and joint attention through books.

    Since March, my district has been providing services through distance learning. Teaching my students through a computer screen has been challenging and, at times, even difficult. I have had to become creative making lessons that capture my student's attention. through a screen. Many of my lessons use the books that you donated to me, and my students enjoy them even from a distance.

    I hope to be back in the classroom soon using the books with my students.”

  • Reading Readiness

    I truly appreciate your donation of adapted literacy materials for my students. As I stated in my project bio, many of my students are non-verbal and need adapted materials to communicate and participate in lessons. These materials allow even my youngest students to learn through books.

    Since March of this year, my district has been providing services through distance learning. Teaching my students through the computer has been challenging, but when using adapted materials such as the ones you donated, it makes teaching and learning more enjoyable. I hope to back in the classroom with my students soon and using the materials with them.”

  • Coding Critters for Communication!

    Funded Feb 11, 2020

    I truly appreciate your donations to my project " Coding Critters for Communication". I want to apologize to everyone who donated that due to the school closures I was unable to have my students make a thank-card. I also was unable to take any pictures of my kiddos playing with the amazing materials you donated. However, I was able to use the materials in a couple of my speech sessions and my students absolutely loved learning to code. Even some of my non-verbal students joined in the fun by using their communication boards to request "my-tun" or "more". I cannot wait when school resumes to continue to use the coding materials in my weekly speech sessions.”

I modify materials on a daily basis for my special education students. One of the ways materials are modified for them is securing pictures to books with velcro. Many adapted books have at least 10-15 places that need a picture or icon secured, so students can match or pull them to communicate. Recently, I adapted the book Llama Llama Holiday Drama for my kids. My older kids were able to answer questions using the icons in the book and my younger one learned new vocabulary words by matching icons to the book. So this means I use a ton of velcro to adapt these materials. This basic request will help modify and create many adaptive materials to be used now and in the years to come.
