  • IB Thinking Hard

    Funded Nov 23, 2020

Our IB department cannot thank you enough for the InThinking Subscriptions. As a new IB school, we have all worked very hard, attended trainings, and collaborated with other IB teachers online to ensure that your students get the very best from our program; however, we are still learning best practices and all of the tricks of the trade to get those scores and get those diplomas.

This program is a total game changer for us. For the first time since I started teaching IB, I can actually access sample oral commentaries and sample IB essays to share with students for them to better understand what's expected of them. These samples were nearly impossible to find before. Our French, Spanish, Math, and Science teachers are able to access actual mock quizzes and exams instead of doing their best to create what they THINK the exams will look like. Our history teacher can have kids log on to InThinking and work with sample primary and secondary source materials that are more likely to show up on their IB exam.

This is just what this program does for the teachers! With this program, students can explore tips and feedback from actual IB graders and former IB students. They can quiz themselves at home; they can practice annotation on released texts; they can get extra tutoring and help with difficult math and science concepts.

I can't say enough about this gift. I also want you to know that, within a day of their accounts being activated, I started receiving texts from teachers who were amazed and excited by what they now have access to. You have truly supported our program in a way that will benefit teachers and students in the long run, and we are so grateful for that support.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Huntley

  • Literature of the World

    Funded Sep 17, 2020

In the International Baccalaureate program, we are asked to show students the issues people face all over the world. We do this through novels, plays, art work, music, cartoons, documentaries, and films. One important aspect of this is reading unique literature by international authors who are not always taught. With these two titles, "Chronicles of a Death Foretold" and "The Visit," students are asked to consider and analyze the very difficult topics of Justice, Mob Mentality, Community closeness, and what we value in our lives. With these same titles, they are also asked to consider these universal topics through the eyes of both an Colombian author (Gabriel Garcia Marquez) and a Swiss German author (Friedrich Durrenmatt). The hope at the end of these studies is to better understand the universality of the human condition; students should feel closer to the rest of the world when they realize that, no matter where and when you live, we're all struggling through the same hardships and issues. Thank you so much for your donation to my class. I truly believe that you are making a huge impact on who these young people will become as adults.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Huntley

  • Online Learning and Covid Safety

    Funded Sep 24, 2020

Thank you so much for your support of my classroom. We are all trying our best to maintain a safe and sanitary environment for ourselves and our students, and your support in this matter has meant the difference between spreading COVID in the classroom and feeling safe and healthy in the classroom. I am proud to say that my students have maintained their highest level of safety with the abundance of these materials, and we haven't had a single student in our IB program come down with the virus. This against the high odds of contracting the illness in our city right now. Thank you so much for helping us stay safe and healthy.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Huntley

  • Can You Hear Me Now?

    Funded Sep 5, 2020

One of the most difficult parts of using the hybrid model for teaching during Covid is trying to interact with kids at different locations and having them interact with each other. The only way I've managed to make this work and still keep our high standard for class discussion and collaborative work has been with headphones. Most of my kids were able to afford their own, but a few kids couldn't and sometimes 1-2 kids leave theirs at home. Your donation has prevented this from becoming a setback for our class. Behind able to have extra headphones and styluses for on-screen annotations and discussions has been a saving grace for the classroom.”

  • Bring English Class Into the 21st Century

    Funded Apr 7, 2020

I would like to share with you how your donations have impacted my classroom. We've all been struggling with teaching to students both at home and in the classroom, and the thing that has made my classroom so successful is the tablet that I received through this project and your donations. With this, I have been able to share the screen on my computer with students both at home and in the room while still being able to see all the students at home on my tablet. In the photos, you can see the setup, and it's been a lifesaver. I think it has kept me closer in touch with my students at home.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Huntley

So often our English classes get stuck in the 20th century with document cameras and projectors, while the science and math classes receive the newest technology. I would like to offer my students a chance to also experience English class with new technology and capabilities. A tablet connected to my digital projection screen will allow me to model essays, revise and edit student essays in front of the class, and even allow students to show their own work to each other. It is vital that students see good writing, learn how to revise their own writing, and help each other with writing. It is my hope that this tablet will change the way we learn how to write as a class. The printer will also be for students. While teachers at my school have plenty of access to printers and copiers, students rarely do. Our class is based on research and projects and students teaching students. This is made much more difficult for students when they do not have access to a printer to accomplish these tasks. When they teach a lesson to the class, they often want to print notes and activities for their fellow students. At times they need to print essays for peer edits or for revision. They may need to print academic articles. This printer will make all of this much easier for students. Finally, the USB chargers are to try and mitigate the distraction of cell phones in class. By creating a charging station in a corner of the room, it is more likely that students will charge their phones instead of being distracted by them in class. It's a way to encourage good behavior rather than punish bad behavior. Many studies have shown that this is more effective to get desired behavior from teens.
